본 논문은 현대사회에서 전도의 윤리적 타당성을 성찰하고자 한다. 사람들을 예수 그리스도께 대한 믿음으로 인도하는 사역이기 때문에, 필연적으로 개종활동(proselytizing)를 수반한다. 개종활동은 복음전도의 사역에서 다른 사람들을 신앙의 세계로 초대하는 필수적인 실천이다. 최근 기독교에 대한 신뢰도 저하, 전도에 대한 부정적 이미지, 다원주의와 표현적 개인주의의 환경은 이러한 개종활동으로서의 전도를 위축시킬 수 있다. 그러나 타인에게 자신의 종교적 신념을 권유하는 행위는 현대 시민사회의 주요한 가치인 자유와 공공성, 그리고 사회적 번영을 추구하는 것과 대립할 필요가 없다. 개종활동으로서의 전도는 사람들에게 더 나은 삶이 무엇인지를 객관적으로 평가하고 제안하는 공적 가치를 지닌 실천이 될 수 있다. 더 나아가 기독교의 복음전도 자체에도 윤리적 기준이 요청된다. 복음전도는 예수 그리스도의 은혜를 선포하는 일이지만, 동시에 그에 상응하는 윤리적 원칙을 견지해야 하기 때문이다. 복음전도의 타당성에 대한 윤리적 성찰은 오늘날 한국 사회 속에서 교회의 전도에 대한 이해와 태도를 제고하여 증인의 사명을 일깨우는데 기여할 것이다.
Abstract
This paper seeks to reflect on the ethical validity of evangelism in contemporary society. Because it involves leading people to faith in Jesus Christ, it inevitably encompasses proselytizing activities. Proselytizing is an essential practice in the ministry of evangelism, inviting others into the realm of faith. Recent declines in trust towards Christianity, negative perceptions of evangelism, and the prevailing environment of pluralism and expressive individualism may inhibit such proselytizing efforts. However, the act of persuading others to embrace one’s religious beliefs does not necessarily conflict with the fundamental values of modern civil society, such as freedom, publicity, and the pursuit of social prosperity. Evangelism, as proselytizing, can be a practice of public value, offering an objective assessment and proposal of what constitutes a better life. Furthermore, ethical standards are required within the practice of Christian evangelism itself. While evangelism involves proclaiming the grace of Jesus Christ, it must simultaneously adhere to corresponding ethical principles. Ethical reflection on the validity of evangelism can enhance the understanding and attitudes toward church evangelism in contemporary Korean society, thereby contributing to the awakening of the mission to bear witness.
