Abstract

This article aimed to have a look at the insight of A. Kuyper on the doctrine of the Triune God. A. Kuyper explained the conception of Ousia, Hypostasis, and the relationship between both from the bottom of the Nicene creed perspective. However he selected Boethius as the dialogue partner for developing his own understanding based on the conception of personhood. In other words, he accepted Boethius’ thesis “Natura rationalis subsistens individuum” as the basement for building up his own view on Ousia as well as Hypostasis. A. Kuyper understood the doctrine of the Triune God from the Nicene creed and the conception of Boethius respectably, for he thought that Boethius followed the same way of thinking the Nicene creed selected. Kuyper defined the divine essence as personhood as such, and furthermore did not admit the existence of the divine essence behind God the Father as the First Person. Thus God the Father as the First Person begets the Only Begotten Son as the Second Person, and naturally the Third Person, the Holy Spirit comes eternally out of the Father and the Son. Consequently, three persons exist in the same personhood, in the simple divine essence. Three Persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit work together in creation, redemption, and consummation. Kuyper’s way of understanding is especially valuable as well as worthwhile in comparison with K. Barth’s understading that does not encompass the simultaneous existence of the three persons in the Triune God as such.
