Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the extensive function of digital dance, a new form of dance combined with digital technology being carried out in diverse forms based on the theory of Marshall McLuhan emphasizing the meaning of media. In the modern society where new cultural environment is being created with appearance of new media, aesthetic exploration on the relationship between digital technology, arts and mass society has important meaning. Inheriting such media theory, McLuhan emphasizes the meaning of media and tries to grant the meaning of media by focusing on the attributes of tools created by technological development. He pays attention to communication of media art. In order to resolve the problem of communication with the audience seen in existing arts, a means of digital media art is proposed to encourage communication between the creator and audience. Digital dance connected with digital technology is showing rapid development. The extensive function of digital dance based on the media theory of McLuhan is as follows. First, digital dance overcomes the limitations of performance art and allows for globalization of the entire world as a single space through extension of temporal and spatial concept. Second, digital dance has an open communication structure as a solution to the problem of communication with the audience possessed by traditional artworks. Third, digital dance has overcome bodily limitations through combination of digital media and technology and extension of expression. In addition, digital dance is not a simple bodily extension but has characteristics of a new genre using the essence of media. There are a number of digital dance to the audience's accessibility increase the audience and make it possible to communicate, and the body's ability to increase in terms of pure dance form of transformation away from a negative perspective about the new dance art as a genre based on popularity can stretch as an art medium. Therefore, media aesthetical perspective of McLuhan enables a new discussion and will be the basis for development of digital dance as a differentiated media art.
