Abstract

There are two categories of mainstream theories of the firm. The first category has contract- perspective theories, which insist that firms exist to minimize the “transaction costs” caused by asymmetric information. The second category consists of competence-perspective theories, which assert that firms exist to develop their “productive capabilities.” Although both theories pursue management efficiency, they disregard the social nature of firms called ‘cooperation’ based on trust, participation and loyalty. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship that participation of members and changes in productivity of consumer cooperatives by using the Malmquist output-based productivity index. The analysis targeted 7 branches of Hansalim and was conducted over 5 years, from 2012 to 2016. The data consists of annual input and output variables, such as financial performance, non-financial performance, and sustainability performance. We calculated the Malmquist output-based productivity index for each of the 7 branches in our sample. The results show that 5 branches improved their average annual productivity by 0.6% between 2012 and 2016 and only 2 branches had a negative change in productivity. By comparing annual changes in the productivity of the 7 branches, it was found that technical change is the most influential cause for changes in productivity. This study shows that consumer cooperatives is a useful business-form for achieving management performance and that participation of members could be a prerequisite for positive productivity change.
