Abstract
This study starts with the premise that accidents are caused by human error. It investigates the effects of safety management system (SMS) factors on safety attitude and safety performance. The research model is proposed, and hypotheses are tested using regression analysis based on the data collected from 125 field workers at a mid-sized machine tool manufacturing company in Korea. The results confirm the positive effect of invisible SMS factors on pressure factors and the negative effect of visible SMS factors on pressure factors, while pressure factors have a negative relationship with safety performance through safety attitude. In addition, they show positive effects of invisible SMS factors on safety perfprmance. This study contributes to the practice of developing SMS to prevent accidents caused by human error and improve safety performance in work environments.
