Abstract

This study examines how creative disposition relates to grit (consistency of interest, perseverance of effort), and how parents, teachers, and peer-related variables moderate this relationship using data from the 4th year (2021) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS) 2018. A total of 2,265 high school freshmen and their parents/guardians participated in the study and we analyzed a multiple regression model with various moderators. The results are as follows. First, controlling for parents'/guardians' creative disposition and grit, students’ creative disposition significantly predicted consistency of interest negatively. Second, parenting attitude, teacher relationship, and peer relationship were positively correlated with perseverance of effort while teacher relationship was positively correlated with consistency of interest. Third, parenting attitude and peer relationship had a moderate effect on the relationship between creative disposition and perseverance of effort. As a result of simple slope analysis, when the positive parenting attitude of parents was higher than Mean+1SD, the higher the creative disposition, the higher the perseverance of effort. However, when the peer relationship was lower than Mean-1SD, the higher the creative disposition, the higher the perseverance of effort. This study confirmed that the relationship between creative disposition and environmental factors varies depending on the sub-factor of grit. This study suggests that specific conditions of parenting attitude and peer relationship are required for creative disposition to lead to grit.
