Abstract

This study is a study on the recognition of the necessity of introducing a senior Taekwondo instructor system in a low birth rate and super-aging society. The decrease in students due to the low birth rate is a crisis for Taekwondo schools, and it is time to seek measures to address this. We conducted a study to identify the awareness of experts working in Taekwondo-related organizations regarding the necessity of senior Taekwondo instructors who recognize seniors as potential main trainees and can guide them by considering their physical and emotional characteristics, and to introduce a policy to train senior Taekwondo instructors. First, we examined the severity of the low birth rate, and this study used purposeful sampling to obtain meaningful data appropriate for the purpose through a non-probability sampling method that is widely used in qualitative research. The results of this study showed that, first, all research participants recognized the seriousness of the problems of the low birth rate and super-aging society, and they were aware of the realistic problems while working in Taekwondo schools and Taekwondo-related organizations. It was found that a change in awareness is necessary to shift the main Taekwondo trainees from the younger age group to the senior age group. Second, as a factor in seniors’ participation in Taekwondo, we were able to identify the common perception that there is a need for a training program that takes into account the characteristics of seniors and the introduction of a professional instructor system to guide seniors. In order to attract seniors, a new group of trainees, professional instructors must understand their cognitive, emotional, and psychological states due to physical aging and their individual characteristics, and have the knowledge to organize and apply programs. Accordingly, we reached the conclusion that the introduction of a professional Taekwondo instructor system for seniors is necessary. It is a time when we must recognize the crisis of Taekwondo as another opportunity for growth and require various follow-up studies and efforts in the field.
