존 웨슬리(John Wesley, 1703-1791)는 ‘교회 안의 교회’(‘ecclesioloa in ecclesia’), 곧 신도회(Society), 속회(Class Meeting), 신도반(Band) 등의 소그룹 교회 구조를 어떤 의도로 만들었는가? 그가 영국 교회 안에서 새로운 교회 구조를 도입한 것은 그의 구원론적 확신에 따른 실용주의적 접근의 결과였다. 그리고 이 소그룹 교회구조는 교회 개혁의 기초로서 제시되었다. 교회 안에 여전히 죄가 있는 것은 진정한 교회의 모습이 아니었다. 부패한 교회 개혁은 성화의 실현에서 시작하고 그것의 교회 구조는 소그룹 형태여야 했다. 그가 만든 속회와 신도반을 비롯한 소그룹은 성화를 이루는 성도들의 교제, 곧 고전적 교회 본질 개념인 ‘성도의 교제’(communio sanctorum)의 실체 구현을 지향했다. 특히 그는 ‘완전 성화’에 따른 성도의 거룩한 교제를 실제화 하는 데에 관심을 집중시켰다. 교회 구조를 소그룹 중심으로 개편한 것은 구원론적 교회론의 정점이 되었다. 그런데 이 소그룹 중심의 교회 구조 개편은 교회 성장을 위한 것이 아닌 교회 개혁의 기초를 제공했다는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 교회 개혁은 ‘교회 안의 교회’가 성공적으로 만들어낼 수 있었던 것이다. 소그룹 교회 구조는 참 그리스도인의 삶, 곧 성화를 이루는 필요한 도구였음을 증명해준 것이라 하겠다.
Abstract
What was John Wesley’s(1703-1791) intention to make a small group church structure, the ‘ecclesioloa in ecclesia’, such as the Society, the Class Meeting, and the Band? It was the result of his pragmatic approach to the salvific conviction that he introduced a new church structure within the Church of England. And this small group church structure was presented as the basis for the reform of the church. It was not a true church figure that there was still sin in the church. A reform of corrupt church began with the realization of the sanctification and its church structure had to be in the form of a small group. The small groups, including the Class Meeting and the Band, sought to realize the fellowship of saints(communio sanctorum), which is the classical concept as the nature of church. In particular, he focused his attention on the practicalization of the holy fellowship of the saints by ‘entire sanctification.’ The reorganization of the church structure into a small group reached the apex of the soteriological ecclesiology. And the small group-centered reorganization of the church provided the basis for the church reform. It did not aim the church growth. Church reform was successfully created by ‘the churches in the Church’. The structure of a small group of churches proved to be a necessary tool for a true Christian life, the sanctification of men.
