우리 시대의 화두로 떠오른 탈진실(Post truth)은 테러, 난민, 코로나 대유행, 기후위기 등의 비상한 상황 속에서 가짜뉴스와 조작된 진실이 비주류 디지털 미디어를 통해서 급속도로 퍼지고 소비되는 기이한 인식론적 현상이다. 탈진실이 초래한 인식론적 위기 에서, 로이 바스카의 비판적 실재론을 신학적 담론에 들여온 웬첼 반 휴이스틴의 후토대주의 논의는 신학의 대안적 인식론으로서 중요한 통찰을 제공한다. 첫째, 반 휴이스틴은, 기독교 신학에서 합리성의 개념 자체를 무력화하는 반토대주의 신학의 신앙주의를 날카롭게 비판하면서, ‘합리성에 관한 근대적 이분법’을 깨고 자연과학과 차별화되는 신학의 합리성을 재고한다. 더 나아가 그는 과학적 서술과 신학적 서술이 ‘합리성’을 매개로 서로 얽히는 중첩이 가능하다고 주장한다. 둘째, 반 휴이스틴은 후토대주의적 합리성 개념을 정립하려고 애쓰면서 신학과 과학이 역사적이고 맥락적인 조건 아래에서 사물과 사태에 대한 최적의 이해를 추구하고, 특수한 상황에 대처하기 위해 책임감 있는 판단을 모색하며, 합리적이고 종합적인 판단을 통해 점진적으로 문제해결을 시도한다는 점에서 공통된다고 본다. 이를 위해 여러 형태의 담론, 사고방식, 행동이 상호교차하고 연결되어 역동적으로 소통하는 시공간을 창출하는 횡단적 합리성이 요구된다. 셋째, 반 휴이스틴은 합리성의 인지적이고 평가적인 차원을 넘어 실제적인 문제해결을 위한 실용적 차원을 강조한다. 합리성은 신념과 이해를 형성하고 활용하는 ‘인간’과 뗄 수 없으므로 ‘인간’이 처한 사회문화적 맥락과 삶의 다차원적 조건에 필연적으로 얽혀있다. 이런 실용주의적 전환은 기후위기 등의 현실적 문제에 대한 신학의 적극적 참여를 고무한다. 반 휴이스틴이 시도한 비판적 실재론의 신학적 사용은 기독교 세계관의 전제나 교리적 연결이 느슨해지고 과학철학으로 기우는 듯한 중도론의 방법적인 한계를 노출한다. 비록 비판적 실재론이 ‘조율하기 까다로운 이론’일지라도, 사실과 가치, 진리와 인식의 질서와 관계와 경계가 무너지고, 조작된 사실이나 가짜뉴스에 근거한 인지편향이 바이러스처럼 퍼지는 탈진실 시대에 기독교 신학이 취할 수 있는 인식론적 대안으로 검토될 가치는 충분하다.
Abstract
Post-truth, which has emerged as a hot topic in our time, is an epistemological phenomenon resulting from the rapid spread and consumption of fake news and fabricated truth through fringe digital media in extraordinary circumstances such as terrorism, refugees, the corona pandemic, and climate crisis. In the context of the extraordinary epistemological crisis caused by post-truth, Wenzel van Huyssteen's postfoundationalism, which brought Roy Bhaska's critical realism into theological discourse, provides important insight as an alternative epistemology of theology. First, van Huyssteen, sharply criticizing the fideism of anti-foundational theology, which neutralizes the concept of rationality itself in Christian theology, breaks the ‘modern dichotomy about rationality’ and reconsiders the rationality of theology that is differentiated from natural science. Furthermore, he asserts that scientific and theological statements can be intertwined and overlapped through ‘rationality’. Third, van Huyssteen emphasizes the practical dimension for solving practical problems beyond the cognitive and evaluative dimension of rationality. Since rationality is inseparable from ‘humans’ who form and utilize beliefs and understandings, it is inevitably intertwined with the social and cultural contexts and multidimensional conditions of life in which ‘humans’ live. This pragmatic shift encourages the active participation of theology in practical issues such as the climate crisis. The theological use of critical realism attempted by van Huyssteen exposes the methodological limitations of the alternative theory, which seems to loosen the premises and doctrinal connections of the Christian worldview and lean toward the philosophy of science. Although critical realism is a 'hard-to-tune theory', it deserves to be considered as a possible epistemological alternative, especially in the post-truth era where the order, relationship, and boundaries of facts and values, truth and perception, and where cognitive biases based on fabricated facts and fake news spread like a virus.
