Abstract
The society and economy of the nomadic state were quite different from those of the agricultural dynasty. First of all, there was a unique marriage system called patrilineal marriage. Unlike the agricultural society where the position of the emperor was seemingly stable due to the primogeniture system, the spirit of succession that the strong should become the monarch and protect the harsh nomadic society caused the nomadic society to be driven into internal strife. The wife of the nomadic monarch, Ke-dun, played the role of the political partner of the nomadic ruler Ke-han, or actively intervened in the succession rights that she asserted, showing the appearance of an active leader of the nomadic society. In this paper, I first focused on the political capacity, subjectivity, and activity of the wives of the nomadic monarchs. From the Yanzhi of the Xiongnu to the Gadon of the Gokturks, their roles could be sufficiently guessed through several records, and since there was no significant difference in the characteristics of the Yanzhi of the Xiongnu and the Gadon of the Gokturks, I examined them together.
