이 글은 이문구 초기 소설에 나타난 서발턴의 담화 전략을 추출하는 것을 목표로 한다. 기존 연구를 통해 이문구는 주로 ‘급속한 근대화 과정에서 농촌 공동체의 해체 양상을 토속적인 방언을 통해 형상화한 작가’로 평가되었다. 반면 그의 초기 소설에서 두드러지는 일련의 도시 하층민들의 독특한 담화 전략에 집중한 연구는 거의 없는 것이 사실이다. 이문구 초기 소설에서 서발턴의 발화는 ‘수행적 언어’와 ‘카니발적 언어’를 통해 재현된다. 발화를 통해 발화자의 정체성 자체를 재구성하는 수행적 언어의 특성은, 구체적으로 한자 교양의 탈권위화와 ‘주변부’ 전통의 계승 등을 통해 서발턴의 담화 전략으로 활용된다. 또한 공식 언어에 의해 문학어의 외부로 추방된 카니발적 언어의 특성은, 구체적으로 구어와 문어의 불일치와 공적 담화 양식의 패러디 등을 통해 서발턴의 담화 전략으로 활용된다. 이러한 사례는 기존 인(문학) 연구에서 ‘말할 수 없는’ 존재로 간주되어 온 서발턴의 ‘다른’ 발화 가능성을 보여준다는 점에서 중요한 성과로 볼 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This article aims to extract the discourse strategies of subaltern in early novels of Lee Mun-gu. Through existing research, Lee Mun-gu was mainly evaluated as ‘an author who embodied the dissolution of rural communities through folk dialects in the process of rapid modernization’. On the other hand, it is true that few studies have focused on a series of unique discourse strategies of lower-class urbanites that stand out in his early novels. In the early novels of Lee Mun-gu, subaltern’s utterances are represented through ‘performative language’ and ‘carnival language’. The characteristics of the performative language, which reconstructs the speaker's identity itself through utterance, are specifically used as subaltern’s discourse strategy through the deauthorization of Chinese-character culture and the inheritance of the ‘peripheral’ tradition. In addition, the characteristics of carnival language, which were expelled to the outside of literary language by official language, are specifically used as subaltern’s discourse strategy through the inconsistency of spoken language and octopus and parody of public discourse style. This case can be seen as an important achievement in that it shows the possibility of subaltern’s ‘different’ utterance, which has been regarded as ‘untold’ in existing study of the humanities.
