Abstract

This article focuses on the representation of marginalized characters such as lower-class women, single women, divorced women, and widows in fusion historical dramas of the 2010s, and analyzes their characteristics. In fusion historical dramas, the oppressive contradictions of status and customs are highlighted through the public activities of lower-class women with specialized fields, or the self-awareness and changes of single women and divorced women. In addition, women who were forced to be virtuous women while being widows were named ‘widow-chaste woman’ characters. It examines how they rejected virtuous women and completed romances with men. In particular, “Knight Flower” attempted to dismantle the discourse of virtuous women and romantic endings. These female characters were portrayed as victims who were not consumed by despair through their appearance of pioneering life. Therefore, it can be evaluated that the worldview of fusion historical dramas was expanded.
