스타트업 생태계 성장 분석: TIPS 창업팀을 중심으로

이 연구는 우리나라 기술 창업기업으로 대표되는 TIPS 창업팀(2013~2021년, 1,634개사) 의 투자 데이터베이스(DB)를 구축하여 스타트업 생태계 관점의 3가지 이슈 즉, 투자 생태계의성장, 스타트업의 성장단계별 마일스톤, 스타트업 생태계의 성장 퍼널(funnel)을 분석하였다. 그 결과, 투자를 통한 스타트업 생태계 內 연결성의 증가를 확인하였다. 둘째, TIPS 창업팀은설립 후 평균 2년 경과시점에 시드(Seed) 투자를 유치하고, 이후 시리즈A 투자를 유치하는 데평균 1년, 시리즈B 투자를 유치하는 데 평균 2.3년이 소요됨을 확인하였다. 셋째, TIPS 창업팀중 38.8%가 시리즈A 투자를 유치하고, 18.5%는 실패하고 있다. 이후 성장 퍼널이 급격하게 좁아지는 즉, 다음 투자 단계로 넘어가기 어려운 상황을 확인하였다. 이 연구는 스타트업 생태계의 성장을 실증적으로 분석한 점에 의의가 있다. 투자 연결성의확대는 스타트업 생태계 내 사회적 자본의 축적과 혁신 정보를 빠르게 유통시켜 생태계의 성장에 기여한다. 그리고 스타트업의 성장 마일스톤을 제시함으로써 업종내 투자단계별 평균적인 성장 기간에 대한 이정표를 삼을 수 있게 하였다. 또한 성장 퍼널 분석을 통해 다음 단계 투자를 받기 위한 원인 규명과 지원의 필요성을 강조했다. 다만 이 연구는 투자 DB가 완벽하지않다는 점과 특정 사업의 창업팀을 대상으로 분석하였다는 점에서 한계가 있다.
Abstract
This study made an investment database of the TIPS teams(1,634 startups, 2013-2021), which was representative of technology-based startups in Korea, and analyzed 3 issues, namely, ① the growth of startup ecosystem through investment network, ② the derivation of milestones through analysis of startup growth stage, ③ startup growth funnel analysis and ecosystem activation strategy. As a result, it was confirmed that the increase in connectivity within the startup ecosystem through investment contributed to the growth of the ecosystem. Second, the TIPS teams confirmed that it took an average of 2 years to attract seed investment since its inception, then an average of 1 year to attract Series A investment and an average of 2.3 years to attract Series B investment. Growth milestones for startups were presented. It was confirmed that growth milestones differ by industry. Third, 38.8% of the TIPS teams attracted Series A investment, while 18.5% failed. After that, it is necessary to identify the cause of the rapid narrowing of the growth funnel, that is, to find out why it is difficult to move on to the next investment stage. This study is meaningful in that it empirically analyzes the growth of the startup ecosystem. Expansion of investment connectivity contributes to the growth of the ecosystem by accumulating social capital and rapidly distributing innovation information within the startup ecosystem. And, it is possible to set a milestone for the average growth period for each investment stage within the industry by presenting the growth milestones of startups. In addition, it emphasizes the need for identification of causes and support for receiving next-stage investment through growth funnel analysis. This study has limitations in that the investment DB is not perfect and that the analysis is conducted targeting the TIPS teams.
