퇴계는 위대한 사상가이지만 동시에 한국을 대표하는 교육자로 평가되고 있다. 도산서원은 교육자로서의 퇴계를 상징적으로 대표하고 있다. 따라서 교육과 관련된 퇴계의 활동과 사상에 관해서는 이미 많은 연구결과가 나와 있다. 그런데 퇴계의 자녀교육관은 어떠했을까? 이 문제에 관해서는 지금까지 학술적 차원의 연구가 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 그 이유는 무엇보다도 퇴계의 교육활동과 관련된 대부분의 자료가 제자교육에 관한 것이었기 때문이고, 다음으로는 자녀교육과 제자교육과 대동소이하리라는 연구자들의 막연한 생각 때문이었다. 그러나 근자에 와서 家書라고 하는 새로운 영역이 개발되기 시작하면서 자녀교육은 제자교육과 다른 측면에서 접근해야 한다는 가능성이 제기되었다. 왜냐하면 제자교육은 道學이라고 하는 이상적 목표를 달성한다는 암묵적 합의 위에서 이루어지는 교육이고, 자녀교육은 선택의 여지없이 선천적으로 주어진 부모자식 관계에서 이루어지는 교육이기 때문에 철저히 현실적일 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 본 논문은 이러한 관점에서 퇴계가 자질들에게 보낸 家書를 분석하여 자녀교육관과 관련된 특징을 정리해 보았다.
Abstract
Toegye is a great philosopher, but also representative teacher of Korean history. Academy of Dosan in Andong is a symbol of private schools in Korea. Therefore so many research results were published of his achievements and thoughts in academic education. But his educations at home were hardly ever studied until now. Because almost every materials of his education are that of academic education. Recently the new materials which is so called family letters have been studying, New point of views were presented that his thoughts of education at home should be approached from considerably different view point from education of academy. This thesis is the result of analyzing Toegye's view of home education by studying his family letters.
