Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the energy concept of elementary school preservice teachers in relation to the energy-related descriptions presented in elementary school textbooks and guidebooks. A survey was conducted for 95 pre-service teachers in elementary school on 6 questions that can confirm the concept of energy, and the results of the responses were analyzed to categorize scientific concepts by type. We also examined the relevant statements in the ‘Our Life and Energy’ chapter of science textbooks and guidebooks in the second semester of elementary school 6th grade. As a result of the study, the majority of pre-service teachers did not scientifically explain the energy conservation and efficiency in the energy transition process for the electricity production process using alternative energy, and about 20% of preservice teachers could not differentiate between energy and matter. One of the reasons that the concept of energy-related preservice teachers is different from the scientific concept may be that they are used to using everyday expressions. It was confirmed that the current elementary school science textbooks and guidebooks use everyday expressions to explain energy-related phenomena. Based on the research results, it is suggested that the textbook should explain the relevant contents scientifically and accurately, and select and organize the learning topic that provides an opportunity to experience the convergence application in various situations so that the scientific concept of energy can be formed.
