Abstract

This research is to study the change of premedical students' humanistic recognition of liberal arts by combining poetry and medical education. The purpose of this study is to prove reading and writing poems change premedical students' introspection and the experience could provide mechanism to practice clinical treatment for reducing pain of body and mind of the patients. Firstly, this research studies the introduction background of literature in medical education as well as the relation between them. The research also seeks to examine the methods and subjects applied by actual premedical students and their writings in order to study the aspects of changes in students' cognition and utilizes the results of surveys to add subjectivity to analysis of original poems. The subject of study is a total of 120 poems throughout the span of 4 semesters by 88 students which went through 4 stage of selection and surveys conducted among them. The pre-med students have shown that they understood the importance of understanding patients' mind and that accepting the patients’ suffering is as critical as the knowledge of medicine itself, in order to become good physicians. Especially in the realm of original poetry, a handful of students have shown expressions of self-reflection and concerns for their future. This clearly shows that poetry self-examining functions and that many students have genuinely gone through positive psychological changes in the process of reading and writing poetry. According to survey analysis, positive awareness for poetry increased from 15 to 36, while negative awareness decreased from 21 to 3, following the course of this study. Thus, there is a clear necessity to enhance poetry education. The results above show that poetry can, in reality, be a communicative tool between patients and doctors in the medical field, and also implies the possibility that these students may in fact, go on to apply poetry as a means of treatment. While this study is limited in that it only borders poetry and medical education, it certainly suggests that humanities can operate as actual problem-solving means in our actual lives. Furthermore, it also presents how humanities can interact with other fields of academics, emphasizing the importance of precedence of common understanding of different academic realms. According to the questionnaire data, those students who encountered poetry. The result of the sutdy has shown that students have recognized that poems can be used as a tool to communicate between patients and doctors and when stuents become doctors, they can use poems as a medium to treat patients in practice. Although this research is limited to the correlation of poem and medical education, it also shows.
