번역과 훈독 -현지화된 문자로서-

본 논문에서 전근대의 동아시아에서 통상적으로 번역과 다른 행위로 파악되는 훈독이라는 행위가 문자언어와 음성언어를 잇는 행위라는 것에 주목해서 종래의 훈독=번역론을 넘어서 동아시아에 있어서의 문자와 음성의 문제로서 훈독을 재정립했다. 또한 현지어에 의한 훈독을 바탕으로 하여 음성언어로 번역을 시도하는 근대일본의 번역행위를 살펴 어떻게 훈독과 번역이 접속되는지, 또 그 의미는 무엇인지도 살폈다. 번역과는 다른 행위였던 훈독이 번역과 동등하게 취급되게 된 것은 일본어에서 권위 있는 문체로 성립되고, 한문과 등가성이 성립되고, 근세이후의 백화문체의 성립에 의해 문자=언어라고 하는 견해가 침투되었기 때문이다. 근대이후 그 권위성과 보편성이 상실되었을 때도 훈독은 영역이 축소되기는 하였으나 문자=언어라는 근세이래의 인식의 지지를 받아 번역의 토대로 충분히 활용되었다. 그 때문에 훈독과 번역의 본질적인 차이가 없다고 여겨졌지만 동아시아의 언어와 글에서 근대의 의미를 찾아내기 위해서는 그 본질적인 차이에 대한 고찰이 필요할 것이다.
Abstract
Kundoku(訓讀) has been regarded as being different from translation in East Asia. This study wants to focus on the features of kundoku as an activity combining "written" and "spoken" language, and reconsider the proposition that kundoku is a kind of translation. Also it tries to investigate the translating activities by kundoku in the Japanese modern vernacular and to find out where kundoku and translation meets and departs and what the meaning it is. There are various reasons why scholars have thought of kundoku as a kind of translation. It is true that kundoku has lost its original authorities in the modern history. However, it has been utilized as a basis of translation with the belief that letters are language. As a result, it has been believed that there is no fundamental differences between kundoku and translation. On the contrary, in order to find out the meaning of modernity in East Asian languages and texts, we need to inquire into the differences between kundoku and translation.
