Abstract
This study analyses the migration of people from Ui-ju(義州) and Yong-cheon(龍川) in North Pyong-an Province(平安北道) to lower Aprok(鴨綠) River areas like Andong(安東) County in the 1910s to early 1920s, focusing on rice farming. The region along the Aprok River is prone to frequent floods and droughts, which is why, from the late Joseon period, irrigation facilities were concentrated there. In the 19th century, rice farming in Pyong-an Province(平安道) was dominated by dry field cultivation, while Ui-ju and Yong-cheon implemented the transplanting method using irrigation facilities. The migration of people from Ui-ju and Yong-cheon began in earnest in the 1910s, led by local rich farmers and landowners. The rich farmers and landowners used the money from selling their land after a project in the 1910s to buy farmland in Andong County and nearby areas. These leases were typically around 10 years. The homes and farmlands of Koreans who cultivated rice were established along the Amnok River and its surrounding areas. The area’s suitability for rice farming was offset by its susceptibility to floods and droughts. The timing of the transplanting method is crucial as missing it due to drought or floods could ruin an entire year’s harvest. The practice of rice farming by Koreans continued until the 1920s, despite the challenges posed by natural disasters such as floods and droughts, as well as the oppressive rule of the Chinese. This can be attributed to rice prices remaining high in Manchuria during the 1910s and the fact that Ui-ju and Yong-cheon had larger populations and higher rates of tenant farming than other regions in North Pyong-an Province. Thus, from the 1910s to the early 1920s, Koreans from Ui-ju and Yong-cheon were important in spreading rice farming techniques, including transplanting, in Manchuria.
