저시력은 시각적 정보를 온전히 해석할 수 없다. 이로 인해 사회적, 심리적, 인지적 발달에 부정적인 영향을 미치는 문제를 가지고 있음에도 그 어려움은 드러나지 않고 있다. 이 연구는 저시력 여성 직장인이 희미하게 바라보는 삶에 대한 연구이다. 이 연구에서는 저시력 여성이 어떻게 바라보고 사는지, 저시력인의 보는 삶이 자신과 타인에게 어떤 의미로 해석되는지 고찰해보고자 하였다. 이 연구는 개인의 체험을 깊이 이해하기 위해 내러티브 탐구를 연구방법으로 삼았다. 그 결과, 저시력 여성의 희미한 삶은 본다는 것, 일한다는 것, 모호한 정체성으로 산다는 것을 알게되었다. 연구 결과를 토대로 저시력인이 사회와 연결되기 위하여 끊임없이 잔존감각 사용하였으나 그에 따른 심리적 고통이 있었고, 저시력 장애의 어려움을 인정하는 저시력 장애 정체성의 새로운 시각이 필요함을 시사하였다.
Abstract
Low vision significantly impairs an individual's capacity to fully interpret visual information, resulting in adverse effects on social, psychological, and cognitive development. Despite the profound challenges associated with low vision, these difficulties often remain under-represented in discourse. This study investigates the lived experiences of low-vision women in the workplace, with a focus on how they perceive their environment and the meanings attributed to their existence in relation to themselves and others. Employing narrative inquiry as the methodological approach, this study aimed to gain a nuanced understanding of individual experiences. The findings reveal that the lives of low-vision women encompass themes of vision, occupational engagement, and the navigation of ambiguous identities. The results indicate that while individuals with low vision consistently utilize their residual senses to foster social connections, they concurrently experience significant psychological distress. This underscores the necessity for a reconceptualization of low-vision disability identity that acknowledges and validates the complexities and challenges faced by individuals with low vision.
