Abstract

The present study examined the links among perfectionism, self-esteem, self-handicapping, and depression, and further determined the mediating role of self-esteem between perfectionism and self-handicapping. The structural equation model was examined from 229 college students. Results indicated that self oriented perfectionism and other oriented perfectionism had positive correlation with self-esteem, negative correlation with behavioral self- handicapping. On the other hand, socially-prescribed perfectionism showed negative correlation with self-esteem, positive correlation with behavioral/claimed self-handicapping. Results from structural equation modeling indicated that self-esteem partially mediated the relation between self oriented perfectionism and behavioral self- handicapping. Similarly, self-esteem fully mediated the relation between socially-prescribed perfectionism and behavioral self-handicapping. Besides, self-esteem fully mediated the relation between self oriented perfectionism/ socially-prescribed perfectionism and claimed self-handicapping. In addition, self-esteem and claimed self- handicapping were positively related to depression. Finally, predictors including socially prescribed perfectionism, self-esteem, and claimed self-handicapping accounted for depression well. The findings and implications in this study are discussed in terms of future research and counseling practice.
