Abstract

The present research sought to verify the short-term effects of mindful self-focused attention on emotional clarity in depressed individuals. Reaction times to emotion ratings were used as an behavioral measure of emotional clarity, instead of self-reports. 148 individuals took part in the study and 59 who met criteria for depression were selected. Each completed an individual 30min session. At the baseline session, participants completed a measure of emotional states and the reaction times through the computerized program. Following the angry mood induction, each participant was randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group which was to engage in mindful self-focus and the control group which was instructed to read excerpts from neutral articles. At last, all participants completed the computerized program for measuring emotional states and the reaction times. The data of 57 participants which was the final sample was used for the analysis. The results analyzed by ANCOVA showed that the mindful self-focus attention group had higher emotional clarity, compared with the control group, after controlling for baseline RTs. This study confirmed that mindful self-focus attention could be an intervention strategy to help the depressed by showing that a short-term experimental treatment to help mindful self-focus can enhance the emotional clarity of the depressed people. This study has a methodological significance in using the behavioral measure of emotional clarity, minimizing biases in self-report, which is particularly important to clinical samples such as depressed people.
