Abstract
This study was conducted to explore experiences of pet euthanasia and risk factors that affect complex grief in the context of companion animal bereavement. Data from 160 adults who have euthanized their companion animals within 10 years and experienced at least one complicated grief reaction were analyzed. The participants completed Prolonged Grief-13(PG-13), Pet Bereavement Questionnaire(PBQ), Brief Symptom Inventory-18(BSI-18), Korean version of Experiences in Close Relationships Questionnaire-Revised(ECR-R), Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale(LAPS), and Grief Cognitions Questionnaire(GCQ). The data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis, one-way ANOVA, multiple regression analysis. The findings are as follows: Complicated grief was highly positively correlated with negative cognitions and psychological maladjustment. Especially, traumatic distress was highly positively correlated with negative cognitions. The level of pet bereavement in cases of acute disease loss was significantly higher than in cases of aging. Multiple regression analysis showed that complicated grief was significantly predicted by negative cognitions, psychological maladjustment, and the presence of another companion animal. Based on the results, the implications and discussions were suggested.
