Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain through the process of self-disclosure why social interaction anxiety affects perceived social support depending on the level of covert narcissism. In this study, covert narcissism was established as a variable that made it difficult to perceive social support, and as a related variable between social interaction anxiety and self-disclosure. For data collection, 244 cases from college students were used for the final analysis, measuring social interaction anxiety, covert narcissism, self-disclosure, and perceived social support. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to identify the effect of the mediated adjustment and significance was verified in PROCESS 3.4. Validating the control path of covert narcissism and self-disclosure in the relationship between social interaction anxiety and perceived social support, the effect of social interaction uncertainty on perceived social support was confirmed to be controlled by covert narcissism. This means that the level of social interaction anxiety interacts with the level of covert narcissism, influences self-disclosure and leads to perceived social support. Based on these findings, suggestions and discussions were made for effective involvement of social interaction anxiety and covert narcissism, limitations of this study and subsequent research.
