Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the mdediating effects of emotional expression ambivalence in the relationship between perfectionistic self-presentation and loneliness for college students, and the controlled mediating effect of self-concept clarity in that path. A total of 199 university students completed a questionnaire survey. The controlled mediation effect was analyzed by SPSS 26.0 and SPSS Process Macro. As a result of this study, the direct effect of perfectionistic self-presentation leading to loneliness was not significant, but indirect effect leading to loneliness through emotional expression ambivalence was significant. Additionally, it was found that self-concept clarity modulates the mediating effect of emotional expression ambivalence in this path. It was confirmed that the mediating effect of perfectionistic self-presentation leading to loneliness through emotional expression ambivalence was alleviated when self-concept clarity is high, loneliness was found to decrease as the result. This suggests that interventions that enhance self-concept clarity can be effective when perfectionist self-presentation causes loneliness through emotional expression ambivalence. Based on the results, the implications of this study and suggestions for follow-up studies were discussed.
