Abstract

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) started to be commercially produced as complex mixtures at 1929. The PCBs are known as a variety of trade names including Aroclor (USA), Phenoclor (France), Kaneclor (Japan), and Sovol (USSR). PCBs include 209 congeners that have been widely applied to dielectric fluid in transformers and large capacitors, heat transfer fluids, hydraulic fluids, lubricating and cutting oils, and additives in pesticides, paints, adhesives, sealants, and plastics. The analytical results were compared using various quantification procedures (US EPA 8082 method, Canada EPA method, and Korean waste test methods) using the Aroclor 1242, 1248, 1254, and 1260 standards. Three transformer oils were also analyzed as a main emission source of PCBs into the environment. Practical quantification limits analyzed by our method were between 0.02 mg/L and 0.05 mg/L, and the recovery of all samples stayed between 78 and 85%. The transformer oils contained the pure Aroclor 1242, Aroclor 1254, and Aroclor 1260 and their mixture. No significient differences were observed among the quantification methods.
