Commercial System in Chosun Dynasty and Critical Review from Modern Law Perspective

Abstract
This article critically reviews traditional commercial systems in Korea, focusing on the period of the Chosun Dynasty. The topics included in this research are market, merchant, manager, and negotiable instruments. The Chosun Dynasty kept full authorities for controlling to open the market, and monopolised specific items of production during this period. This system caused a couple of problems. But, at the same time, influential merchants successfully did business in the newly formulated environment. They were working on the business for factorship, transportation, warehousing, and finance. As a result, the system for negotiable instruments was also developed. However, overall, the Chosun Dynasty had its own limitations for further developing the commercial field so only limited success was achieved. This derived from the fact that doing business, or being involving in commerce, was highly undervalued and looked down upon in the society.
