초록

The Korean ministry of environment has recently placed stricter criteria on the outflow of public wastewater treatment plants to improve the receiving water quality for rivers and lakes, and therefore, water quality monitoring, especially real-time online monitoring has become a very important social issue. In Korea, there are 60 monitoring stations located atmajor streams and lakes to measure the status of the water quality on a realtime basis. In addition, 653 TMSs (tele-monitoring systems) have been managed for monitoring water quality of effluent from public sewerage-wastewater treatment facilities and wastewater discharge sites nationwide since 2008. The major monitoring parameters measured by sensors include pH, dissolved oxygen, electrical conductivity, and turbidity and items measured by analysis instruments include COD, TN, and TP. Among the items noted as major parameters are the total nitrogen and total phosphorus. The Korean Ministry of Environment demands certain concentrations of total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) as water quality criteria to assess the status of water quality. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the TP and TN concentrations using the measured parameters by an estimation algorithm. In this study, we investigate the potential application of a software sensor by which TP and TN concentrations are estimated using pH, EC, DO, turbidity, and nutrient data such as NO_2-N, NO_3-N, NH_3-N, and PO_4-P measured simultaneously foran identical sample as the input dataset.
