초록
This paper explorers “aesthetic devices” in A Gesture Life by Chang-Rae Lee and An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro. In these novels containing some historical or cultural situations, their works are quite different from other Asian Diaspora writers. Both writers try to illuminate history and its trauma through aesthetic devices such as narrative techniques, imagination, character, motif, etc. As a post-memory generation, they have mainly focused on imagination which is beyond factual truth. The most representative case would be the mediated characters. Anguished characters, and their various selves under psychological and cultural formations provide worthy philosophical investigations into narrative acts of reflecting or rectifying memory of people and events. Both writers imagine aesthetic devices can make up for cracks and gaps in historical facts in the form of metaphorical imagination. Ultimately these kinds of aesthetic devices help opens up the possibility of hidden stories that are more traumatic than others and require a more profound remembrance or forgetting.
