초록

This paper analyzes Richard Flanagan’s debut novel, Death of a River Guide, using the concepts of hauntology and mourning. The haunting ghosts of the past in Tasmania are Eastern European and Asian immigrants, Aborigines, and the indigenous wild animals which had been hunted and become extinct by the white Europeans. Their ghosts, having not properly mourned, appear through the ruptured joint of linear time which the dominant power constructed. Alzaj Cosini sees the visions of the ghosts of his ancestors and comes to terms with his unspeakable sense of fear and humiliation. It will be argued that the novel suggests a persistent communal mourning to heal the memory of loss and the sense of fear which probably all the Tasmanians feel and respond to in various ways.
