The study analyzes a personal history of violence and loss in Incendies, focusing on trauma. The film portrays Jeanne and Simon’s journey to trace the past of their mother Nawal, which oscillated between Christianity and Islam, student and terrorist, mother and prisoner. This research pays attention to the narrative of the film based on the myth of Oedipus, where the mechanism of trauma is related to loss and separation. The history of the Marwan family, which borrows the structure of the aforementioned Greek tragedy but applies a twist at the climax, depicts the mourning and melancholy of loss and suggests the attributes of trauma. In addition, Nawal’s narrative, which recounts the memories and emotions of wounds, suggests working through such wounds and facing the loss following trauma.
