초록

This study compares and analyzes 1984 and Brave New World, focusing on the motif of counter-memory. While Brave New World portrays a world where individuals are engineered from birth and living in contentment within their predetermined roles, 1984 depicts a stark reality characterized by pervasive poverty and harsh surveillance. Despite their apparent differences, their ruling powers commonly seek to maintain the status quo by annihilating human emotions, thoughts, and records of the past, including literature and art. The erased world of individuality and human dignity is symbolized by Shakespeare, while Shakespearean counter-memory plays a pivotal role in the protagonists’ resistance against totalitarianism. The catastrophic endings of both novels serve as a poignant warning to contemporary society, where trends similar to those depicted in these works are increasingly prevalent.
