Abstract
This essay offers a new reading of Nietzsche’s influence on D. H. Lawrence. Due to strong affinity and alliance between the two authors, there have been various scholarly efforts to draw Nietzschean thought from Lawrence’s works in spite of Lawrence’s own official criticism of Nietzsche. However, Lawrence’s direct indictment of Nietzsche dispersed in his oeuvre consistently aims at the central concepts of Nietzsche’s philosophy, ‘will to power’ and ‘eternal recurrence.’ This essay argues that differences rather than resemblances between the two authors call for more explication and that these differences are no other than their battlefield, resulting from their resemblances. The essay defines the term ‘influence’ as “poetic misprision” as Harold Bloom posits it in his Anxiety of Influence. The main argument of the essay develops from both authors’ view of nature which is the common ground in their criticism of Modern age to their vision of ‘being’ based on the unconscious. Nature is integral to both authors’ projects of deconstructing mind consciousness that constitutes basic premises of the Western metaphysics. It also argues the strong relevance of their projects to deep ecological thinking today which ascribes environmental problems to the characteristic way of thinking predominant in the Western culture.
