Abstract

The purpose of this study is to reveal how human consciousness, especially subconsciousness and unconsciousness, is expressed in Lawrence’s novels and run a follow-up survey on its dramatic effect. Lawrence described the action of characters as the projection of either subconsciousness or unconsciousness in The Rainbow, searching for the interior self. In The Rainbow, Lawrence developed the techniques of reflected viewpoints, unlike those in the former novels. He tried to describe the inner world of the characters by reflecting the delicate subconsciousness instead of directly expressing the strong consciousness in a conventional style. The unique expression such as a telescoping method or an “underwater” perspective which makes use of the movement, conflict, antiphonal balance of all things or of the underwater image, is a special technique which heightens dramatic effects in reflecting human consciousness. In Apocalypse, Lawrence explained the cyclic uses of images for expressing intuitive consciousness, which he claims is proper device of expression coping with the too much cerebral and mechanical age of emotional sterility like modern times. In terms of this viewpoint, Ursula Brangwen whose subconsciousness was strong, unlike Paul Morel in Sons and Lovers, achieved self-development in the modern sense. In The Rainbow, Lawrence extended the domain of Ursula’s self- awareness by treating profoundly the analytical technique of modern consciousness and achieved the dramatic effect of subconsciousness and unconsciousness. He also made use of a cyclic technique of image in order to describe the action and emotion of the main characters, of which the repetition and cumulation came into being from the imitation of the changing process in the natural world and of its rhythm.
