Abstract
This paper is an attempt to discuss some characteristics of mythical symbols (on the ground of myth and ritual) in Lawrence’s Apocalypse, “The Fox,” “St. Mawr,” and other writings in connection with his dogma of “art for my sake.” In Chapter I, I will examine some universalities founded in the unique art theory of Lawrence as compared with the writings of other authors and critics. In Chapter II, I will substantiate some sources of mythical and ritual elements from Apocalypse. In Chapters III and IV, I will discuss a quite different kind of myth with unique symbolic expression, employed by Lawrence in “The Fox” and “St. Mawr,” namely, the animal or totemic myth. In Chapter V, I will emphasize the three characteristics: first, Lawrence has built up the foundation of symbolic expressions from ancient myth and ritual; second, psychological symbolism, based on the theories of Sigmund Freud and Adler Jung; and third, by expressing totemic elements figuratively Lawrence bound man, nature, and the universe together, while the kind of symbolic action created in “The Fox” and “St. Mawr” is much more difficult to achieve in the novel.
