Abstract
This paper examine D. H. Lawrence’s monismic unification of matter and mind, where the former refers to body, and the latter soul. He is a kind of mystical materialist when he was young, but gave up such belief later and turned into a believer of pantheism or religion of spirit or animism which keep people whole alive and sensual interchange between the subject and object, through his or her blood-consciousness. Therefore Lawrence feels that all the man, nature and cosmos, including material or matter are blood-being or blood-soul. His utopian vision lies in the primitive, old culture such as American Indian society. He embodies such vision in his novels such as The Plumed Serpent, “The Woman Who Rode Away,” “St. Mawr,” The Rainbow, Women in Love, and Lady Chatterley’s Lover, etc. Lawrence’s materialistic pantheism, or animism leads to embodied soul(mind), and blood-affinity, blood-relation. He believes in blood and flesh, and it goes right but mind or mental consciousness leads to wrong direction. His ‘blood’ means cosmic life-substance. He tries to reestablish such blood-consciousness and blood-soul common in the old, primitive religious culture in the modern industrial society.
