「님의 침묵」에서의 ‘님 찾기’를 다시 생각해 본다

이 글의 목적은 만해 한용운의 시 「님의 침묵」을 심우도의 틀에 비추어철학적으로 성찰해 보는 데 있다. 심우도는 잃어버린 소를 되찾는 과정을 그림으로 나타낸 것이다. 사람들은 ‘소 되찾기 그림’과 ‘소 되찾는 노래’를 보고 읽음으로써 불성의 본질을 좀 더 잘 이해할 수 있다. 「님의 침묵」에서 불성의 본질에 해당하는 것은 ‘님’이다. ‘님’은 ‘나’와 기룸의 관계에 의해 맺어진 모든 것을 말한다. 만해에게서 기룸은 아끼고 보살피려는 마음, 그리고 늘 그리워하고 더 베풀지 못해아쉬워하는 마음을 뜻한다. 기룸의 대상으로서의 ‘님’은 만나거나 헤어질 수 있고,고통이나 희망을 줄 수 있으며, ‘나’와 다르거나 하나가 될 수 있다. 이 글에서 ‘님’의 본래적 정체성은 이러한 ‘하나 됨’에서 찾아질 수 있는 것으로 제시된다. 이 글은 「님의 침묵」을 네 단계로 풀이하면서 각 단계를 심우도의 진행 단계와 비교한다. ‘님 찾기’의 첫 단계는 ‘나’가 ‘떠나버린 님’을 다시 되찾기 위해 길을 헤매는과정이고, 둘째 단계는 그 ‘님’의 발자국을 되쫓는 단계, 셋째 단계는 ‘님’은 가까스로 다시 찾았지만 ‘님의 기룸’을 끝내 다시 잃어버리는 단계, 그리고 마지막 넷째단계는 ‘나’가 자연과 인연(因緣)에 대한 깨달음을 통해 ‘님’을 감격적으로 다시 만나는 행복의 단계이다. 이러한 단계는 심우도가 나타내는 심우(尋牛), 견적(見跡),견우(見牛)와 득우(得牛), 그리고 목우(牧牛)에 견줄 수 있다. 이러한 네 단계를거친 ‘나’는 자연의 이치를 깊이 깨닫고, 헤어짐과 만남 그리고 삶과 죽음이 ‘하나’임을 받아들인다. ‘나’는 이러한 깨달음과 받아들임에 기초하여 ‘님’과의 만남을 확신할 뿐 아니라, 이미 그 만남의 세계 속에서 ‘님’과 하나 된 모습으로 살아간다. 이러한 경지는 심우도에서 기우귀가(騎牛歸家)의 노래로 그려진다.
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze a Korean poem, “The Silence of My Love” written by Manhae Han Yong-un, with a frame of Shim-oo-do, also called as “The Ox-herding Paintings.” It is a series of Buddhist paintings describing a story of an oxherd, from his seeking out a lost ox to bringing it back to his hometown. The paintings and songs of getting back the lost ox help people understand the nature of Buddha easily. In a Korean poem titled “The Silence of My Love”, it is “Nim (or “my beloved” in English)” which corresponds to the nature of Buddha. Nim refers to everything that is formed in love between Nim and “me”. To Manhae, “Girum (or “love” in English)” is a willingness to take care of something, to show every kindness to others, as he always longs for something. Nim, the object of “my” affection, is the one whom “I” can meet and leave, the one who can give “me” both pain and hope, and the one who can be different from “me” but become one with “me”. According to this paper, the ultimate nature of Nim can be found in the process of “becoming one.” Also, this paper explains the poem “The Silence of My Love” in four stages, comparing each stage with that of “The Ox-herding Paintings”. To sum up, the first stage of “finding Nim” is “my” wandering to getting back Nim who has left me, the second one is “my” re-tracing Nim’s step. “I” manage to discover Nim but lose Nim’s love again and that is the third stage. “I”, however, end up reuniting with my Nim creating a touching scene in the final fourth stage, after realizing the order of nature and the ties between people. These four stages can be compared to those of “The Ox-herding Paintings” respectively: In the paintings, the ox-herd wanders in the mountains to find his lost ox (The first state). He discovers the ox’s footprints, follows them (The second stage), and finally regains it (The third stage). He tames the ox, concerned losing it again (The fourth stage). Through these four stages, “I” deeply understand the nature law and accept that there is no difference between life and death as they are basically “the same thing”. Based on this realization, “I” get to have the hope and confidence that “I” would meet Nim again and can live on hugging Nim in “my” mind, as if “I” am with Nim. The process of “my” reaching such spiritual stage is also described in “The Ox-herding Paintings,” as the song of an oxherd’s going home riding his ox.
