Abstract

This Treatise is aimed at examining how ‘psyche’ and ‘askesis’ to be changed from classical Greek philosophy and Hellenistic philosophy to early Christianity. Psyche is integrating concept in Greek philosophy, which is formed a unified system from it’s various roles and functions. Early Christianity chooses not psyche but pneuma, and regard to be ontologically superior pneuma to psyche. However psyche and pneuma have a similar meaning, and pneuma has a material images much more than psyche. Futhermore temperance and self-restraint are main concepts relating askesis in Greek philosophy. We are temperate by self-restraint. If we want to be happy, we have to pursue to exercise of temperance. The practice of the soul in Greek philosophy was influenced to spiritual exercises in early Christianity. It has not only self-control and self-restraint but also a metaphysical aspect of selftranscendency. Though the practice of the soul is just in need of our effort, spiritual exercises is in need of God’s help in addition. All of the practice of the soul and spiritual exercises are aimed to change the way of life to enjoy the best life. But they have a difference not in method, but in external features.
