이 논문에서는 첫째, 가다머가 철학적 해석학하에서 아리스토텔레스의 ‘프로네시스’ 개념을 어떻게 수용하는지 검토할 것이다. 한편 아렌트는 가다머와 조금 달리 정치적 전회 이전에 받아들였던 아리스토텔레스의 ‘프로네시스’ 개념을 1933년 정치적 전회 이후 정치이론가의 시각에서 세계개념을 중심으로 재해석한다. 둘째, 이러한 맥락에서 세계 내 정치현상의 열렬한 관찰자인 아렌트가 ‘프로네시스’를 자신의 정치적 판단론으로 어떻게 발전시키는지를 살펴보려 한다. 셋째, 가다머와 아렌트가 이해하고 있는 ‘프로네시스’는 20세기 현상학이 발견한 생활세계인 공동 세계의 지식으로 수렴된다는 점을 검토할 것이다. 이 과정에서 가다머가 개척한 ‘세계’ 개념과 아렌트가 준용하는 ‘세계’, 특히 ‘공동 세계’ 개념이 우리 시대의 긴급한 현안을 이해하는 것에 어떻게 원용될 수 있는지를 살펴보고자 한다.
Abstract
In this paper, I will first examine how Gadamer accepts Aristotle’s concept of phronēsis under philosophical hermeneutics. Second, I will elaborate on how Arendt appropriates Aristotle’s concept of phronēsis to her own theory of political judgment. In this political sense, phronēsis is a kind of insight and understanding of human affairs that are good or bad for men. Third, I will argue that Gadamer and Arendt develop Aristotle’s concept of phronēsis into their own life-worldly knowledge, that is, doxic excellence. For them, the world, especially the common world, functions as an indispensable medium for praxis.
