Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to introduce an Australian historian, Greg Dening. He is called the founder of 'Melbourne School' of historiography which pursues the ethnographic history. Dening criticizes vehemently the so-called scientific historiography which believes firmly historical facts can be found by objective research. He suggests rather that history is something to be interpreted culturally. He is also regarded as a post-modern historian who insists historiography is to make a re-text of the past text. In this view point of historiography, he has written the so-called Pacific history which told the stories of the encounter of the Islanders and the Europeans. In his writings he showed himself as an anti-'Pacificist' and a cultural relativist who was influenced by such anthropologists as Levi-Strauss, Clifford Geertz. His historiography is to be estimated as a frontier historiography which widens historians's view of both methodology and subject of their research.
