충남대학교 ‘大學史’ 편찬에 대한 시론적 고찰

충남대학교의 대학사는 1982년 『충남대학교 삼십년사』(이하 ‘30년사’로 약칭)를 시작으로 2002년 『충남대학교 50년사』(이하 ‘50년사’로 약칭), 2012년에 『충남대학교 60년사』(이하 ‘60년사’로 약칭)를 간행하였다. 그 사이인 1992년에는 40주년을 기념하는 사진집을 간행하였다. ‘30년사’는 초창기, 전환기, 확장기, 도약기 4시기로 구분하고, 마지막으로 미래상을 제시하였다. ‘30년사’는 당시 대학 구성원들의 발전에 대한 열망을 담아 편찬되었다. 중요한 여러 규정을 함께 수록하여 후일 대학의 역사 파악에 주요 기반을 마련하였다. 다만, 자료적인 한계로 개교 초기의 상황에 대해서 충분하게 설명하지 못한 점이나, 총장의 치적이라는 관점에서 서술된 점은 한계라 하겠다. ‘50년사’는 1982년에 간행한 ‘30년사’를 계승하여 편찬된 것이다. ‘대학사’를 편찬하면서 “50년 역사 속에서 역사성을 찾”고 “충남대학교의 정체성 확립은 물론 대학사의 이해에 일조”할 것이라는 서술은 의미가 있는 지적이다. 이런 목적의 표방은 당대 역사상을 고려한 서술로 나타났다. 특히 서술상의 중복을 피하고 되도록 대학의 창립과 이념, 발전의 역사를 기록 정리하여 校史로서의 관점을 유지할 수 있도록 하였다. ‘50년사’는 각 시기별 한국 사회의 흐름을 전제로 대학사의 서술이 이루어졌다. 다만 ‘50년사’도 앞서 ‘30년사’의 서술과 같이 총장의 취임과 퇴임 등을 자세하게 서술하였다. ‘60년사’는 ‘50년사’에 대해 전체적인 분석을 하고 그의 기본체재를 따르면서 축약하고 최근 10년사를 비교적 상세하게 서술하는 원칙을 정하였다. ‘60년사’는 전반적으로 내용은 ‘要覽’式 서술로 이루어진 것이 특징이다. 즉 규정이나 변화 중 중요한 내용을 보기 편리하게 내용을 간추려 서술하는 방식이다. 마지막으로 대학사 서술과 관련해서 시기 구분 문제나 서술 체계 등에 대한 필자 나름의 고민을 제시하였다.
Abstract
The publication of the Chungnam National University history started with “Three Decades of Chungnam National University (hereinafter abbreviated as “Three Decades of History”) in 1982 to record historical moments of the school administration. Afterward, “Five Decades of Chungnam National University (hereinafter abbreviated as “Five Decades of History”) was published in 2002, and “Six Decades of Chungnam National University (hereinafter abbreviated as “Six Decades of History”) was released in 2012. In celebrating the 40th anniversary, a commemorating photo book was also published in 1992. The Three Decades of History were divided into four chapters; the early days, the transition, the expansion, and the leap period. This book was published with the desire of university members at the time by presenting a quest for future growth, Numerous crucial regulations were included to lay the foundation for grasping the university's history in the future. However, the situations in the early days needed to be sufficiently elaborated due to the material limitations, and the history book mainly focused on the facts regarding the previous presidents' achievements. “Five Decades of History” was compiled with features from the heritage of “Three Decades of History,” published in 1982. It was significant that the book described the historical identity of the Chungnam National University over fifty years and contributed to a profound understanding. The narrative description for this purpose appeared considering the historical circumstances of the time. In particular, The Five Decades of History tried to maintain the historical perspective regarding organizing and recording the university's school foundation, ideology, and development. It describes the university's history on the premise of the flow of Korean society in each period. However, The Five Decades of History also depicts in detail the inauguration and retirement of the presidents as The Three Decades of History. A comprehensive analysis of The Five Decades of History was applied to follow an entire summarizing system in publishing The Six Decades of History with abundant descriptions for a recent decade. The Six Decades of History is elaborated to outline and describe the meaningful contents among regulations or changes for easy viewing. Lastly, I presented my concerns about the timeline division and the narrative system of the university history.
