Abstract
In order to enter the Waegwan, Koreans must have received the permission of the Head Official of Dongrae-bu. However, Koreans frequently visited the Waegwan informally. The Japanese recognized the Waegwan as their territory, thus they could not understand the Koreans visiting the Waegwan without notice. However, the Korean interpreters who were at the forefront of communication with Joseon had to host them. At that time, the role that the Korean interpreters played was as follows. First, when the Koreans visited the Waegwan, communication became the role of the interpreter because it was performed in Korean. Second, when the Koreans suddenly visited the Waegwan, the Korean interpreters hosted them in their own dwellings and prepared Japanese dishes according to their needs. Third, because the Waegwan was the only space where Koreans could see foreigners at home and experience a foreign culture, there were cases in which they were of too much interest and gave displeasure to Japanese people. At that time, Korean interpreters played a role in explaining Japanese culture to Koreans. Fourth, I have attempted to gather information from the personal meetings with Koreans on the collecting of information related to Joseon, which was the obligation of communicating in Korean. In the unofficial exchanges between Korea and Japan, which took place in the Waegwan, and which was the boundary between Korea and Japan, Japanese people were displeased with the actions of yangban in Joseon, who expressed curiosity in foreign culture and expressed an authority consciousness. However, that could not be revealed. The reason was that Tsushima maintained its livelihood through the trade with Korea, which made it more difficult than ever to have difficulties with the Koreans, who included yangban who could affect their work. I believe it was best for the Korean interpreters to present problems to the translator who made frequent contact with their friends and asked for corrections.
