Abstract
Kim Yo-Seop is a poet as well as author of fairy tales in which poet figures often appear. This paper examines the reasons that poets appear in his fairy tales. In early fairy tales, Kim Yo-Seop’s inner thoughts appear in various forms, such as written works within the narrative and the appearance of a literary tea house called “Wings.” The literary device used by Kim Yo-Seop that is most representative of his inner thoughts is the poet character. Poets appear not only as main characters that lead the story, but as people who have problems with the use of language or speech. This poet character appears both in Kim Yo-Seop’s early fairy tales and his later ones. In general, if there are no figures in a narrative, no incidents can occur. Without human characters, epic stories cannot exist. Character is an essential element of narrative. The literary critic Kim Cheon-Hye uses a term derived from Greek tragedy when defining types of characters, and introducesthe terms protagonist and antagonist. The two types of people who appear as poets in Kim Yo-Seop’s fairy tales were identified referring to the these character types with the concept of owners and wives. This paper focused on poet characters in Kim Yo-Seop’s fairy tales and analyzes the meanings of these works through their representation of such characters. These characters present a solution to the central problem as the story progresses. The form of the story changes with the period in the work, and the enormous power that the poet character resists changes for the same reason. The unfair feudal system and military dictatorships that the poet resists were shaped by Japanese tyranny, the mercilessness of war, and the fate set by nature. However, the changing imagesof these stories and characters have one thing in common. In these stories, itis the poet’s will to remain complacent, to imagine and hope for a better future, and to try to carry it through. This is a meaningful way of analyzing the role of poets in through the changing representation of poet characters in fairy tales.
