Abstract
This paper compares the image of knighthood depicted in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the film The Green Knight (2021). As an honorable goal for warriors to pursue, knighthood in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is depicted through diverse stories. But stories can change in content or emphasis depending on the speaker, and the speakers outside the chivalric community re-interpret stories about Camelot’s knights, reforming and criticizing the ideals of knighthood. Women are revealed as key critics in this process. The film stresses women’s roles even further, and reveals the darker side of knightliness in the court while also criticizing the nobility and honor traditionally ascribed to knighthood. The portraits of Gawain made by women authors in the film—the painting, the camera obscura image, and puppet show—are of paramount importance in exposing the gap between Gawain and the idealized/exemplary knightly identity that he is forced to pursue.
