Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to look over the aspects of Junghyunsuk's translating traditional korean poetry into sino-korean poetry. As far, there was little information about him but we can know a lot about his life and work by this paper. He was a manager of late Chosun dynasty. and he had managed many places and later he became a vice-minister of the department of treasury. He established the first modern educational institution and wrote a lot of books and so on. In 1867, when he became a minister at Chinju in Kyungsangdo, and he made Gisaeng learn songs and dance. And he made a book by translate their songs. That is 『Kyobangkyo』. It was written in 1872 and he translate about 100 poems into Chinese. And he wrote the steps of traditional dance and expressed his feelings after he saw the dance play by Sino-korean poetry. He knew the worth of value of traditional korean poetry and grasped the difference between Korean poetry and Chinese poetry on language and word system. He selected the truthful and worthy poetry, and translated into the form of Chinese poetry. The purpose of Translating into Chinese like this is to appreciate by the Sino-korean poetry which is the most familiar genre to Yanban-the intellectual class of the age. and to write the traditional Korean poetry(at that time they think that the Chinese letter is the real letter) which has the same value with Chinese poetry. The most theme of his selection is the love between man and woman. and the festive mood. There is little about Yanban's thinking and Confucian thinking. Though he translated a lot of work, his work has constant system in translation method. And he translated with accuracy as he could. Junghyunsuk's work can have very important meaning in the history of traditional Korean poet and sino-Korean poetry.
