Abstract

The Korean dance achieved a tremendous development both in quality and quantity between 1960s and 1990s during the period of military governments of Park Jeong Hee, Jeon Du Hwan and Noh Tae Woo. While it was the gloomiest period politically, splendid economic growth and continued buildup of national strength were also achieved as the regime leaders concentrated on the economic development to secure their legitimacy. Furthermore, they employed a nationalism discourse to lay a foundation of legitimacy of military government. Government-manufactured nationalism discourse intended to restore discontinued traditional cultures and represent the history for national identity. In the process, the Cultural Properties Protection Law was enacted as a means of traditional culture protection policy. When the traditional dancing was appointed as a cultural property, it experienced revival from the alienation in the past, and became the starting point of the Korean interpretative dance. From 1970s till now, both traditional dance choreographers, and ballet and contemporary dance choreographers have accepted tradition subjectively and actively to create new forms and foundational thesis with their experimental spirit,and have played a pivotal role in the development of the Korean dance. This thesis attempted to examine political and social conditions under the government-manufactured nationalism discourse during the military regimes (1961.5.16 ~ 1992.12.18) to figure out the development process of traditional dance and to investigate the effect of traditional dance on the Korean dance. Thus, it demonstrated the systematic policy of the military governments to protect and transmit traditional dance, an intangible cultural asset in crisis, through nationalism narrative has achieved a tremendous success in the development of Korean dance.
