제주돌가마(石窯)의 소성(燒成)에 관한 연구 -연구자의 돌가마(石窯)를 중심으로-

문화(文化)는 한 집단에게 주어진 여러 환경 여건에 맞게 적응하면서 살아온 집단의 생활양식(生活樣式)이라고 할 수 있다. 그러므로 문화는 언제나 자연환경(自然環境)에 제약되며 지역문화의 내용을 규정한다. 도자기의 발전과 변천은 시대와 지역에 따라서 달리 나타나고 있으며 제주의 문화가 제주라는 풍토와 자연환경을 배경으로 발달해 온 바와 같이 제주의 도예 문화 역시 풍토(風土)와 자연환경(自然環境)에 크게 영향을 받고 있다. 제주의 도예문화는 내륙의 도예문화와는 다른 특징을 보이며 이는 다른 지역에선 볼 수 없다는 점에서 독특하며 학문적 가치가 높다. 이러한 현실 속에서 사라져버릴지도 모르는 제주 돌가마(石窯)의 소성법을 기록 보존하고자 본 연구를 시작하게 되었다. 본 연구는 제주 돌가마의 고찰 및 구조를 살펴본 후 제주돌가마(石窯)의 소성(燒成)에서 보여지는 여러 가지 특징들을 정리했다. 또한 소성(燒成)이 제주 옹기의 색채에 어떠한 영향을 주고 있는가에 주안점을 두었다. 제주돌가마(石窯)는 돌(현무암)로 축조가 되었으며 가마의 구조 역시 자연환경(自然環境)에 영향을 받아 내륙의 가마와는 다른 모습을 보인다. 소성재료도 내륙과는 다른 섬피(나뭇 가지 묶음)를 사용한다는 특징을 보이며 소성과정 역시 색다른 모습을 보인다. 따라서 제주돌가마 소성(石窯燒成)의 모든 과정을 정리함으로서 소성(燒成)에 대해 자세히 이해하고 제주돌가마의 구조에서 오는 특징, 소성방법에서 오는 특징, 흙에서 오는 특징 등 제주옹기와 관련된 많은 궁금증을 해결해 줄 수 있으리라 생각된다. 또한 장작가마를 소성함에 있어 많은 도예인들이 한층 수월하고 보다 성공적인 결과를 기대할 수 있으리라 믿는다.
Abstract
Culture is a way of life of a group that has been well adapted to the given environment. Culture is restricted by natural environment and defines a local culture. Every period and locality has different development and change of ceramic ware. Jeju culture has been developed on the basis of Jeju regional climate and natural environment. So, Jeju ceramic wares were influenced by the Jeju own climate and natural environment. Ceramic culture in Jeju has many peculiarities, which cannot be seen in other areas. So, Jeju ceracmic culture has important academic values. This study is for writing and preserving the firing of Jeju stone kiln which might disappear. This thesis will examine the structure of Jeju stone kiln and show the many characteristics of the firing of Jeju stone kiln. This thesis will focus on how the firing influences the colour of Onggi (a kind of ceramic ware). Jeju stone kiln is made of "Hyunmuam"(basalt) and its structure is influenced by Jeju natural environment, which makes Jeju ceramic very peculiar. The material for plasticity is "sumpi" (a bundle of sprig), which is not seen in other areas. This thesis will arrange all the processes of firing of Jeju stone kiln, and examine the structure of Jeju stone kiln and the method for firing, and investigate the peculiarities of Jeju clay and Jeju Onggi. This work will make many potters do their plasticity easily and get a successful result.
