Abstract
Purpose: This study explores the concept and theory of North Korean folk dance after 1945, examining changes and characteristics by period. Methods: A literature review was conducted using sources such as the Joseon Encyclopedia, Joseon Local Encyclopedia, Joseon Folklore Dictionary, 20th Century North Korean Arts and Culture Dictionary (Digital), periodicals, newspapers, and North Korean monographs. Result: After 1945, North Korean folk dance was excavated and systematized alongside the establishment of the Kim Il-sung regime. In the 1950s–60s, dance emphasized socialist themes like labor and combat, with simplified stage adaptations. The 1970s–80s focused on Juche ideology, incorporating folk elements and props to promote working-class identity. The 1990s saw the creation of folk dance suites combining national forms with socialist content. Since the 2000s, modernization and new compositions have reflected a renewed emphasis on tradition. Conclusion: North Korean folk dance has continually evolved under political influence, diverging from its pre-division roots. Ongoing research is needed to restore its original form and identity as a shared cultural heritage.
