Abstract

‘Musical quotation,’ one of compositional techniques developed since medieval music, is represented in a new and original way in Helmut Lachenmann(1935- )'s Accanto: Musik für einen Solo-Klarinettisten mit Orchester. The quoted Mozart's Clarinet Concerto K. 622 remains intact, played by a tape recording, without being modified or united into Lachenmann's music; and is heard momentarily and intermittently while Lachenmann's radically experimental music is played on stage. Such a paradoxical quotation, i.e., unheard quotation despite coexistence through the playing time, is a kind of Lachenmann's reaction to 'aesthetic apparatus.' As a result of this hidden quotation, both Lachenmann's and Mozart's musical dimension coexist in a unique way, creating a contrapuntal relation in the following aspects: fetishistic and anesthetic world vs. introspective and critical world; meta-music vs. object music.
