While the Korean economy and the German economy have some historical similarities, their economic outcomes are different. The phenomenal performance of the German economy has long drawn attention of many Korean academics to ordoliberalism and the social market economy of Germany. This paper is to provide an explanation for ordoliberalism and to explain which roles ordoliberalism of German government play in dealing with the euro crisis. The Freibrug School’s Walter Eucken suggests that the market order should be based on a well-functioning price mechanism and perfect competition. The role of the state is to be limited to guarantee them. The social market economy combines the ordoliberal ideas and the necessities of social goals. The Freiburg and social market economic theorists disagree on their views about the completeness of the market order and the role of state in the social policy. Alfred Müller-Armack implemented the ideas of the social market economy into Germany’s economic policy and Erhard adopted it to prepare eoconomic programs for Germany. The euro crisis still threatens stability of euro and the future of the EU. The crisis is caused by excessive imbalances of derogatorily so-called GIPSI countries suffering from twin deficits. During the crisis, the German economy has drawn the attention of others for its prudence and the mandates imposed on other members of the euro area. German economic policies show ordoliberal traditions in many aspects: they postulate sound public finance, the constitutional approach, and the liability principle. The eurozone has been divided along the ideological lines in how to dealing with the euro crisis. Five countries are selected from both sides to compare numerically their ordoliberal attributes and the outcomes.
