Abstract
The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the relative importance of policy demands regarding the living environment in enhancing life satisfaction among older adults in Korea, a society experiencing rapid population aging. For this purpose, data from the 2023 Korean Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHASA) Survey on the Living Conditions of the Elderly were utilized. Based on the expectation-confirmation theory, the study approached policy demands for the living environment as corresponding to satisfaction with living conditions. Satisfaction with the living environment was classified into private space (housing satisfaction), public space (community safety and accessibility to public facilities), and social interaction. As dependent variables, overall life satisfaction, satisfaction with community relationships, and satisfaction with social, leisure, and cultural activities were analyzed. Multiple regression results indicated that satisfaction with private space, namely housing-related policy demands, had significant effects on all three dimensions of life satisfaction, with the strongest effect observed in overall life satisfaction. Satisfaction with social interaction, or policy demands related to expanding neighborhood exchanges, contributed most to community relationship satisfaction but showed relatively weaker effects on overall life satisfaction and satisfaction with social, leisure, and cultural activities. Satisfaction with accessibility to public facilities, reflecting policy demands for facility installation, significantly affected satisfaction with social, leisure, and cultural activities, as well as overall life satisfaction. Community safety satisfaction showed small effects across all three dimensions. These findings suggest that, in order to enhance the life satisfaction of older adults, housing environment improvement policies should be prioritized, while also promoting social interaction and improving public facilities and safety infrastructure. The study is limited by its cross-sectional design, which restricts causal inference, as well as by cultural, demographic, and life-cycle considerations stemming from sampling constraints.
